SNAP Support

The recent cancellation of SNAP benefits for November has left many families in our community struggling to afford groceries. As a church, we are called to "Do Good" and respond with love and compassion. Through our Missions Ministry, we’ll continue providing Pantry and Snack Bags to anyone in need throughout the week, and we will continue serving lunch on Sundays through our Sack Lunch Ministry.  We’ll also provide breakfast and lunch at Our Daily Bread for more than 100 guests at each meal this month. Finally, on November 24, we host our Thanksgiving Ingathering meal for more than 200 of our neighbors facing food insecurity. As we continue to put our faith into action, here are additional ways you can help:

  1. Donate food items by filling our Extra-Thankful food bags for our Thanksgiving Ingathering meal. The addition of these food bags will fill the gap for many of our guests, especially late in the month when other community resources are depleted.
  1. Pantry Bags – We are currently fully stocked with 50+ pantry bags because of the previous generosity of our congregation. As the needs in our community reveal themselves, we will let our congregation know if/when more of these resources are needed.
  1. Snack Bags - We provide Snack Bags for our neighbors who are on the go and do not have the capacity to cook food. One major item that we use in these Snack Bags is pouches of Tuna. This is an item that is not readily available from the Food Bank. We will collect donations of tuna pouches, which can be dropped off at the church's front desk.
  1. Give financially to our mission partner, the Food Bank of Northeast Georgia. The Food Bank has significantly more buying power than the average person, and by leveraging your funds to go farther, more people in our community can be fed. As the Northeast Georgia Foodbank increases its purchasing by 400% this month, we have donated additional funds to support their work and invite you to consider donating to their efforts.
  1. Sign up for the Mission Update, our weekly newsletter for all mission opportunities and updates on how to get involved in serving in our community. You can sign up through the Missions webpage on the church website.

As we continue in our response to love our neighbors and keep them fed, our Missions Ministry thanks YOU, our congregation, for the many ways you have already put your love into action, and the ways you will continue to show up for our community and serve Athens first.
