Faith Milestones

Milestones are important “firsts” we celebrate in life – like our first steps or words. In Kids at Athens First, we celebrate faith milestones, from infant baptism through the promotion to Student Ministry in sixth grade. We are honored and privileged to walk alongside children and families in these special moments.

Baptism | Infants

Baptism is a beautiful celebration of God’s grace and new life in Christ. Through water and the Spirit, we are initiated into Christ’s holy church. At Athens First UMC, we see baptism as a covenant between parents and our church family to love, nurture, and support a child in their faith. To honor this covenant, parents’ membership in the church is required. Parents are welcome to join the church the same day their child is baptized.

Tell Me the Stories | 3 Years Old

One of our sweetest faith milestones is the 3-year-old “Tell Me the Stories of Jesus” Milestone. At this informal gathering, children receive their very first storybook Bible from their church family and begin to discover the joy of God’s Word. Their excitement and eagerness to read their very own Bible is a beautiful picture of child-like faith. This milestone will be celebrated in February with a special family Sunday School experience for our 3-year-olds.

Holy Communion | 2nd Grade

Our 2nd Grade Holy Communion Milestone invites children and their parents or special grown-ups to learn about the meaning and history of Communion. Kids will explore and sample the elements, make a keepsake to remember the day, and then join their families in the 11:00 worship service to celebrate Communion with a deeper understanding. This special milestone will take place in February.

Bibles | 3rd Grade

One of our most meaningful milestones is when third graders receive their very own Bible from their church family—a gift to help them grow in God’s Word and their relationship with Him. We’ll celebrate this special moment with children and their families during the 11:00 worship service, then continue with a luncheon where one of our clergy will lead a “How to Use Your New Bible” mini-workshop. In the weeks that follow, our third grade small group will also explore and learn together during Sunday School. Our next Third Grade Bibles Milestone will be September 28, 2025.
