Frequently Asked Questions about the Saye Building
Why is the Saye Building being demolished?
In 2015, the church formed a Building Committee to recommend a plan for the Saye property. This Committee met regularly over a two-year period to review feasibility studies, engineering reports, and financial analysis. These assessments revealed that the Saye Building, which Athens First United Methodist Church acquired many years ago, cannot be renovated or restored in a cost-effective manner.
What will replace the Saye Building?
In the short term, the lot will be converted into parking. However, our long-term plans are for something other than parking on this site. Over the next few years, we will prayerfully consider how to best utilize this space to serve the Downtown Athens community.
How long has the church been planning this demolition?
The church has spent many years working to obtain the necessary permits to demolish the Saye Building. We are grateful to have reached an agreement with Athens-Clarke County to proceed.
How does this decision reflect the church’s mission?
For generations, Athens First United Methodist Church has been a steward of faith in downtown Athens, maintaining inspiring spaces for worship, service, and celebration. As we celebrate our 200th anniversary downtown this year, our commitment to maintaining a strong physical and spiritual presence downtown remains. This decision ensures we continue to be responsible stewards of our property and resources, preparing for the next 200 years of ministry.
Is the Saye Building being torn down for the purpose of having more parking downtown?
No. It will be parking in the short term, but rest assured that our long-term plans call for something other than parking for that parcel. We are proud of the inspiring spaces we have maintained downtown for many decades and look forward to remaining part of the community’s fabric for our next 200 years.
How does Athens First United Methodist serve downtown?
Athens First actively serves the downtown community in a number of ways. Even as we have preserved our 140 year old sanctuary, we have evolved with downtown. Today, we provide meals and vital services for the downtown community on a weekly basis through Souper Suppers, Sack Lunch Ministry, and by collaborating with various ministry partners. Our gym and recreational facilities offers programs to youth and seniors in the community, and our Athens First United Methodist Preschool serves youth from across the region. Each week more than 1,000 members and guests attend a variety of services, programs and gatherings as we seek to serve our community and grow our faith.
