Welcome to Athens First United Methodist Church

Our mission is to make disciples of Jesus Christ. In our effort to fulfill this mission, we are inspired by the words of John Wesley, the founder of Methodism. John Wesley encouraged believers to “do all the good you can, by all the means you can, in all the ways you can, in all the places you can, at all the times you can, to all the people you can, as long as you ever can.” At Athens First United Methodist, there are many ways to get involved, grow in your faith, and do good in our community.

Join Us for Worship

We are so glad you are considering joining us for worship. Helpers are located in the narthex and altar areas between services to answer any questions you have or to help you find your way to a restroom or classroom. We are a downtown church and sometimes parking can be hard to find. We have two lots off of Hancock Ave and parking is also available on the street. If all of these options are full, the Washington Street parking deck offers free parking on Sundays.

Newcomer Orientation

Sunday Worship

We offer three worship services on Sunday mornings. All three services are traditional; we love our hymnals and organ!

  • 8:30 a.m. Service
If you are looking for a small church atmosphere, try the 8:30 a.m. service. On average, 200 people attend this service. This is a small, close-knit group that loves to welcome newcomers. During the Passing of the Peace, people don't just turn to their neighbor to shake hands; they leap across pews and aisles to greet friends and give hugs. Communion is offered each Sunday during the 8:30 a.m. service.

  • 9:45 a.m. & 11:00 a.m. Services
These services average 400 to 600 worshipers and are full of energy. The Sanctuary Choir is present during these services and is often accompanied by horns, strings, and woodwinds. Communion is offered the first Sunday of every month. 9:45 a.m. is also the Sunday School hour and is a great way to get plugged in.
  • Sunday school Classes
Wednesday Nights

We offer a variety of programs for all ages on Wednesday nights. These programs include adult and youth Bible studies and choir rehearsals for children and adults. We also offer Wednesday night meals that are catered by various local restaurants.

Opportunities for Families

Nursery & Preschool

As your children grow from infants to four-year-olds, we will introduce them to God's presence through singing, storytelling, arts and crafts, and sharing.

Children's Ministry

Our children's environment is designed to feel like you walked into a child's storybook Bible. Each room has been designed and painted by different groups in our church.

Route 56

We serve fifth and sixth graders with engaging programming geared towards creating an environment where students are excited to grow in their faith and friendships while having a lot of fun!

ONE Student Ministries

We are one body, word, life, and believe in one God. These beliefs led us to name our youth group ONE Student Ministries. We invite all students in grades 7-12 to join us for our weekly programming and special events!
