Cub Scouts

Cub Scout Pack 1 (boys and girls, grades 1-5) is in its ninth year. Pack 1 includes 91 boys and girls and 15 adult leaders. The pack earned Gold Status again, the top rating under BSA quality unit system ranking Journey to Excellence. Boys and girls from Pack 1 participated in day and overnight camps, family camps, our annual flag retirement ceremony, and many field trips. The pack also hosted our annual Pancake Supper. Up next, the Pack will compete in the Pinewood Derby, assist with cleaning the church grounds before Easter, and host our spring family campout. Last May, five scouts crossed over to Boy Scout Troop 1 in 2019.

Pack 1 meets on Sunday afternoons at 3:00 p.m. To learn more about a den or events available for your child, visit our webpage or contact Cubmaster Dan Lasseter.

Boy Scouts

Boy Scout Troop 1 (boys, grades 5-12) begins its 85th consecutive year with Athens First United Methodist Church! We recently completed our re-charter with 21 scouts and 14 adult leaders. Once again, Troop 1 has earned Journey to Excellence Gold which is the top rating possible for the BSA quality unit system. Over the past year, we have participated in weekend outings almost every month including backpacking in South Carolina, canoeing on Lake Lanier, a ski weekend in North Carolina, two Advance-a-Rama's working on merit badges, and a week of summer camp at Camp Rainey Mountain in Clayton. The troop also attend a Camporee where they won several first palace ribbons in competitions with other troops. We also served as one of the staff Troops for the Cub Scouts Fall Family Camp at Camp Rainey Mountain. We currently have 3 scouts working on Eagle projects to earn Scouting's highest rank of Eagle Scout. Scott Miller again served as Woodbadge staff offering the highest level of adult leadership training available in Scouting. In the coming year, we look forward to hiking, biking, small boat sailing on Lake Allatoona, aviation flight simulation at Warren Robbins and summer camp at Bert Adams.

Venturing

Venturing is a co-educational program of the Boy Scouts of America for youth/young adults who are 14 – 20 years of age.  Venturing is youth-led and directed.  The three missions of the Scout Venturing Program are Leadership, Service, and Adventure.  Venture Crew 1 has been sponsored by Athens First United Methodist Church since 2013.

The BSA Venturing Program has a tripartite mission of leadership, service, and adventure.  A 12-day trip in June to Philmont Scout Ranch in Cimarron, New Mexico, was the highlight of the year and the culmination of a year of planning and training.  The youth leadership and esprit de corps were truly exemplary.  Service projects this year were primarily in the area of conservation as Philmont participants worked to complete the BSA 50 miler award.  In the Fall, crew concluded successful recruitment of adult leaders and a new cadre of Venture's, and secured a reservation for a return to Philmont Scout Ranch in summer 2021.

Girl Scouts

Girl Scout Troop 12057 (girls, grades 6-12) has had a year full of service, leadership, and physical activity. The girls created a holiday light display that was shown at A. H. Stephens State Park. It communicated the Cherokee legend of the Winter Solstice. They also planted a poppy flower garden at Camp Martha Johnston in honor of Moina Michael, The Poppy Lady.  During summer day camp, three girls volunteered to assist adults in leading younger girls in activities related to the outdoors. Dolan O'Neal earned her Silver Award, the highest achievement for a Cadette. Three girls attended the council Teen Leadership Conference this fall. To get moving, these eight girls and five adults have been walking and talking during many hikes at Sandy Creek Park, the UGA Botanical Gardens, and Tallulah Gorge State Park. Plane tickets to Paris and train tickets to Switzerland have been purchased for this June. The girls look forward to seeing the Eiffel Tower, tasting chocolate, and hiking the Alps.
