Kids Music and Arts Activities

All Kids Music and Arts activities meet on Wednesdays at Athens First United Methodist Church.

Primary Offerings

Music and Movement | 5:20-6:00 p.m.
Room 314 (Amphitheatre on the Elementary Sunday School hall)
Music and Movement, led by beloved AFUMC preschool teacher Alyssa Fowler, is our introduction to choir and dance for children who are age 3 by September 1, 2019. Our time together will involve singing, dancing, playing instruments, and using our whole selves to praise God. Parents or caregivers are welcomed and encouraged to stay and participate as their little ones adjust to our class! Music and Movement participants may choose to participate in a variety of opportunities throughout the year, including the fall dance recital, Christmas Eve, Children's Sunday, and the End of Year Program.

Sonshine Choir | 5:20-6:00 p.m.
Room 325 (Tabernacle on the Elementary Sunday School hall)
A beginner children's choir that includes singing and movement activities for children who are age 4 by September 1, 2019. Sonshine Choir is led by Matthew Lawing, a music educator at Colham Ferry Elementary, and participates in our Children's Christmas Eve worship service, Children's Sunday, End of Year Program, and periodically sings for other worship and fellowship events.

Joy Choir | 5:20-6:00 p.m.
Room 320 (Temple at the end of Elementary Sunday School hall)
Focuses on beginning vocal development and movement activities as preparation for learning musical concepts for kindergarten age children. Joy Choir, led by Patti Pitts (former preschool music educator) and Josh Luke (music educator at Rocky Branch Elementary) participates in our Children's Christmas Eve worship service, Children's Sunday, End of Year Program, and periodically sings for other worship and fellowship events.

Lyric Choir | 4:30-5:20 p.m.
Room 151 (Children's Choir Room in Music Suite)
Focuses on expanding singing skills and basic musical concepts for grades 1 and 2. Lyric Choir, led by Sarah Lawing, our Director of Children's Music Ministry, participates in our Children's Christmas Eve worship service, Children's Sunday, End of Year Program, and periodically sings for other worship and fellowship events.

Celebrate Choir | 5:10-6:00 p.m.
Room 151 (Children's Choir Room in Music Suite)
Focuses on singing skills, part-singing preparation, and music reading preparation for grades 3 and 4. Celebrate Choir, led by Sarah Lawing, our Director of Children's Music Ministry, participates in our Children's Christmas Eve worship service, Children's Sunday, End of Year Program, and periodically sings for other worship and fellowship events.

Secondary Offerings*

*Students wishing to register for a secondary offering are strongly encouraged to also register for a primary offering.

Lyric Worship Arts | 5:20-6:00 p.m.
Room 301 (above Sanctuary near garden entrance)
A quarterly rotation of Rockin' Rhythm, Handchimes, Drama, and Visual Art for grades 1 and 2. Lyric Worship Arts is led by Nancy Hartgrove, an experienced music educator. Students should plan to also attend Lyric Choir, especially during the Drama unit as we prepare for Children's Sunday.

Celebrate Worship Arts | 4:30-5:10 p.m.
Room 301 (above Sanctuary near garden entrance)
A quarterly rotation of Rockin' Rhythm, Handchimes, Drama, and Visual Art for grades 3 and 4. Celebrate Worship Arts is led by Nancy Hartgrove, an experienced music educator. Students should plan to also attend Celebrate Choir, especially during the Drama unit as we prepare for Children's Sunday.

Dance | 4:30-5:15 p.m.
Room 145 (next to the Adult Choir Room in the Music Suite)
In this class led by Cate Malanoski, children will learn ballet basics and build their knowledge of individual technique and group dynamic as they come together to worship God through movement. This class is for Pre-K and Kindergarten students. Dancers will participate in the Fall Dance Recital in Hancock Hall. This class will include a small snack before dancers are escorted to choir by their leaders. Due to the instructional nature of this class, there is a limit of 15 participants. We will keep a wait list for this class. After 3 consecutive absences, participants will be contacted to determine if they wish to continue or give their spot to the next student on the wait list.
*As of 8/19/19, Dance registration is full. If your child would like to be on the wait list, please email Erika ( ) and we will add them to it. If a spot becomes available, we will offer it to children on the wait list on a first-come-first-served basis.

On Track | 4:30-5:10 p.m.
Track above gym (enter next to main offices on second floor)
This new offering for Pre-K and Kindergarten students will focus on age-appropriate body awareness goals through a variety of activities such as stretching, balance and strength exercises, walking and jogging, climbing, karate, and gymnastics. Led by Coach Rusty, this class will include a small snack before “trackers” are escorted to choir by their leaders. Due to the instructional nature of this class, there is a limit of 15 participants. We will keep a wait list for this class. After 3 consecutive absences, participants will be contacted to determine if they wish to continue or give their spot to the next student on the wait list.
