At Athens First United Methodist Church we have a protocol for responding to the needs of our community during inclement weather. We currently work with representatives from community agencies, as well as the directors of The Bigger Vision Homeless Shelter. In single-digit temperatures (when requested) we act as an overflow shelter, using their in-take procedures and screening. The Bigger Vision specializes in offering overnight shelter to the homeless community and we have found it best to follow their lead and partner with them in their time of need.
What can you do?
We need volunteers who are willing to cook meals and to spend the night in our church when we open our doors. This means as soon as we know the temperatures are dropping into the single-digits, we will prepare a team to serve for an evening, or several if necessary.
If you think you would be willing to serve our community in this way, please contact Betsy Butler and we will begin to form an “Emergency Response Team” to meet the immediate needs in Athens.
